Fishing Fun

Now that our weather has taken a better turn and it's starting to warm up, we have been busy working on lots of home improvement projects. Pictures of those things will be coming soon, but we've been busy trying to finish a few things without starting anything else. This was a holiday weekend so we tried to make sure we carved out some time to do some fun things with the kids.

After we finished up our projects (or at least got to a part where we could stop) we loaded up Shawn's leaky jon boat and his kayak to go fishing at Glendalough State Park. We have to take two boats because our family would probably sink Shawn's jon boat if we were all in it at the same time. This lake doesn't allow motors on boats so we couldn't bring our nice, new boat. This two boat arrangement usually leaves Shawn in charge of most of the kids and rods and I take the kids out one at a time for rides in the kayak. It was a little bit breezy so my arms really got a workout going to the far side of the lake and back. The kids had a blast and I think Shawn even managed to get a few casts in before we headed to Granny's Pantry for ice cream in Battle Lake. It was a great ending to a fun weekend!
Karolyn's 17 1/2 inch bass. It was HUGE!

Kassidy's fish. She loves to fish as long as we have snacks along.

Kaylee had the second biggest fish of the day and we thought it was pretty big until Karolyn hauled hers in.

Kolsen caught a couple and had lots of bites, but I didn't get any pictures of his fish. I guess he'll have to go back for that big one that got away some time without the girls and I.

Kassidy and I in the kayak. My pants were really wet from her helping me paddle.

A Different Look Each Day

I'm always amazed at how school looks different each day around our house. I kept thinking that we would use our fun classroom each day, but we are usually doing school in different places each day. This past week Kolsen finished all his school work by lunch time and asked if he could paint his room. Of course, I had to say yes. He's such a hard worker! He finished adding the whole second coat by himself and had been bugging me to add his stripes on next. Hopefully this weekend we'll get around to finishing up his room so he can put all his stuff back in.

The girls weren't quite done with school yet, but they didn't want to miss out on any of the action so they all plopped down on Kolsen's bed to watch him paint and finish up their school work. LT was napping upstairs, right above us so we tried to be quiet, but quiet and my girls don't usually go together.

As our school year is drawing to a close and we are finishing up our Countries and Cultures curriculum from My Father's World. We've spent the past year studying each of the continents, countries and environments. My kids always amaze me with what they are learning and remember. With our curriculum came a geography game that we played every so often and I don't think I was ever able to beat Kolsen at it. Earlier in the week Kolsen said he was ready for his final test so I handed him 5 blank maps of the continents and he was able to label over 100 countries on them! He only missed one of the ones we had studied and it was a small country in Europe, but he did add a few "extra" ones that we didn't have time to learn about. This kid amazes me each day and I'm so thankful to see him growing and enjoying his education! He's usually up and started on his school work when I get up each morning.

The Snow and Ice are Gone!

The snow and ice are gone and we finally made it over to the lake this week. Shawn and Kolsen ran the two miles to the lake with Abby and the girls and I drove to the lake. The kids enjoyed dipping their feet in the cold water. We only brought one towel, so we tried to keep everyone fairly dry! Abby enjoyed fetching her bumper in the water, but no dock jumping this day because the dock and boat ramp were busy with the weather being so nice. After we played for a while, Shawn, Kolsen and Karolyn ran back home together (with the wet dog) while the little girls helped me get dinner on the table.

They can't wait until its warm enough to swim!

Kid's Safety Day

Last week we were able to attend the Fergus Falls Kid's Safety Day. The kids loved looking in all the different equipment. I'd say the ambulance, fire truck and swat truck were the favorites. Lincoln's dad, Matt was stationed at the swat truck and explained all the gear that they used at work. The kids also liked getting to see their finger prints. They were amazed at how God can make us all so unique!

In the ambulance, learning about all their equipment.

Thanks Matt for the heads-up on this event. I think the kids had a blast.

Our Garden is Started

It has finally warmed up enough for us to start planting our garden. I can hardly believe how much the grass has greened up in the last week and I'm excited that our trees are starting to leaf out.

We're ready mom!

Shawn bought some tomatoes, green peppers, banana peppers and jalapeno plants. We're dreaming of fresh canned salsa already. The rest of the garden we planted with seeds left over from last year. We planted peas, green beans and lettuce. Nothing too exciting, but we also signed up for Bluebird Gardens CSA again this year, so we get LOTS of fun veggies from our box of veggies each week.

Kolsen helped dig most of the holes around our raspberry plants.

Kassidy was on clod patrol and loved wielding a hoe to break up all the big clumps of dirt.

One More Room Done

The two little girls were so excited this week since we finally got around to painting their green and blue boy room.

We had lots of help throughout the whole project and I added some trees in one of the corners. The girls are really happy with their green and pink girl room and I just have to figure out what we are going to hang on the walls.

Curly or Straight?

What is it about being a girl that makes us want to make our hair curly if it's straight or straight if it's curly?

Either way, I LOVE this girl!

The Papon's Visit

It's been a week since Shawn's parents came to visit, but I'm finally getting around to posting pictures of their visit. They had a short visit this time because the weather was bad on Thursday when they were supposed to fly in. Who would have thought Kansas and Minnesota would be having snow in May?
Karolyn has been my reluctant writer, so we celebrated her writing some stories and poems by publishing her own book on Winkflash. Of course we had to print one for Nana Yvette since the stories were all about horses. She loved typing her story and adding pictures.

We managed to squeeze quite a few activities into our Saturday schedule. Our first stop was the Home Depot Kids Project Day. They have free projects for kids every first Saturday of the month. It was fun to have one helper for each kid!

After Kaylee's dance show we went to the Green Wing Fair put on by the Fergus Falls Fish and Game Club. We had to pay for the kids to get in, but adults were free. They had it at the community arena and both ice rinks were full of fun activities for the kids to do.

mmm...hot dogs for lunch. I'm pretty sure the kids enjoyed them, the adults were hoping for something else. :)

Kassidy loved the blow-up obstacle course.

Karolyn hitting the hoops.

She was a dead eye at the rubber band guns.

Kassidy trying out the rubber band guns with daddy's help.

 Kolsen shooting a cork gun.

Shawn helping Kolsen and Karolyn learn to use a bow and arrow. We may have to get some arrows for the bow that Nana Kristi got us this summer.

They drew for prizes at the end of the event and all four kids won a prize. Kassidy won a PINK bb gun, Kaylee got a new fishing pole, Karolyn got a new T for baseball and Kolsen won a bb/pellet gun.
Papa, Shawn and Kolsen building a hen house. We've built quite a few of these and even put them out on wetlands.

Kassidy was worn out by all the fun.

On Sunday, after church we stuck around the house and had fun playing games and crafting.

Kolsen talked Papa and Shawn into playing Ticket to Ride.

Nana and Karolyn worked on cutting out some horses for a quilt Nana is making for her.

They also got our the ladder golf game. The weather was pretty cold and yucky the whole visit, but we managed to have tons of fun anyways.

Enjoying our first bonfire out back. I'm going to have to stock up on smores stuff.

We were sad when Nana and Papa had to leave to go back home on Monday. Working is overrated!

Karolyn, Kassidy and LT helped me drop Nana and Papa off at the airport. They had to climb in the plane and help push it out the hangar. Since we didn't have enough room in our van for everyone, Kolsen and Kaylee volunteered to stay home to get a head start on schoolwork

Pilot LT
Kassidy and LT enjoyed riding in the plane while we pushed it out of the hangar.

 Bye!

That was a fast few days and we can't wait to see them again in July along with Eric's family.

Good Weather

On Tuesday the weather was so wonderful that we finished school by lunch and then spent the afternoon at the park. We enjoyed our first picnic lunch for the year, played baseball on the field, and even squeezed in some tennis. We only have a few weeks left of school to finish up so we're enjoying our afternoons out and about when we can't resist the nice spring weather.
