Youth Waterfowl Day

Shawn and Kolsen had a great time during youth waterfowl day. They had been scouting hunting spots for a few weeks and ended up going to their third choice spot because so many people were out that morning! It's a good thing we has so many places to go hunting around our county. Kolsen shot six ducks, but they couldn't find one, so he came home, grinning from ear to ear with five ducks. I'm pretty sure it'll be pretty hard for Shawn to go hunting this year without a helper or two.

Gooseberry Falls State Park

I love Minnesota! Our state is beautiful and has so many amazing places to visit. Our summer was so busy this year that we didn't get out camping until September. We decided to try out a new state park and went to Gooseberry Falls, which is over on the North shore of Lake Superior. It was amazingly beautiful and the kids had a great time. I also love that my parents can remember bringing me here as a child when we made it up North to visit my mom's sister Jerri and her family. I'll definitely have to see if my mom can find some pictures of me at the park.

Getting ready for our private tour of the Gitchi Gummi Trail with one of the park workers. We ended up camping on Sunday night through Tuesday so most of the park and camp ground was empty. The kids loved it when he showed them all the berries they could eat around the park.

On of the views from the trail. Our campground was about a five minute hike from this picture.

Looking out at Lake Superior. The kids loved that you could see WI from the shore on the first day. food.

They had really nice bike trails, but it was pretty hilly so we didn't make it outside of the park.

The kids LOVED that they could crawl all over the rocks and touch the falls.

Holding on to the troops while looking over a cliff.

The kids loved this rock bridge/tunnel!

Karolyn was all over!

We had beautiful weather each day, but it was cool enough to enjoy some hot chocolate each morning.

A beautiful lighthouse that was in the State Park just North of Gooseberry.

We did most of our biking from the campground up to the visitor's center.

They found the loot!

I can't wait until we can go back!

Partners in Wetland Restoration

Shawn enjoys his job as a private lands wildlife biologist so much. One of the local t.v. station interviewed him about one of the wetlands he restored last year and then posted it to youtube. They did such a great job and I think you can tell by watching the video that Shawn is passionate about wildlife.

Work Force Supervisor

It's a hard job, but someone has to stand around and supervise the workers.

Everyone worked really hard and our deck is totally done, stain and all!

Kansas Trip, part 3

After a quick one night stay at Shawn's brother's house and a few at the Papon farm, we drove up to Hutchinson to spend a few nights with my parents. This was a pretty short trip for us, only 11 days, but we ended up staying in 5 different locations (6 if you count Kolsen going to the Royal's games with Yvette and Bruce).

We were able to celebrate Isaac's birthday with some yummy gluten free cake!

Then my mom arranged for us to take a tour of the Hedrick's Animal Farm which is only about 10 minutes from my parent's house. The kids had a great time feeding and petting all the exotic animals.

Ike and A.J gave us a tour of a new park in town.

Aunt Staci organized a treasure hunt around the house for all the kids!

My mom and I found a few minutes to sit down and relax.

Then my mom organized a day for family from out of town to visit. My Aunt and Uncle drove down from the Topeka area and my cousin's family came over from Rose Hill to spend the day. We had beautiful weather and the kids had a great time riding all the four wheelers and other fun toys.

We also managed to squeeze in a day of sewing with the girls!

It was a whirl wind trip and we had a blast getting to see so much of our families! Hopefully, our December trip won't be quite so crazy. We sure know how to pack the most fun into a few days.

Hands-on Projects

This year we're using My Father's World again and we will be studying, Rome through the Reformation for history. We are also doing human anatomy and astronomy for science. We've done quite a few fun hands-on projects already this year.

Kassidy showing off her brain and mosaic.

 Kaylee's brain project.

 Kolsen's brain project

All the kids with their brain caps and mosaic projects.

Kassidy was learning about the sun this week and Kaylee decided she wanted to do the science projects too. They had fun marking their sun dials all day.

All the kids made wax tablets to simulate how the Roman's wrote with tablets. Karolyn covered hers with duct tape.

Kolsen shows off the parts of the Bible we made with match boxes.

Learning about the bones is way more fun when you can practice on your brother!

I love how My Father's World has all the kids learning the same things at the same time. They all learn so much together and can still work at their own levels. We've put in five weeks of school between all our travels for vacation and other activities. It's been a great year so far and I can't wait to see how the kids grow throughout the year.

Pictures From The Farm

I may have borrowed Nana's camera while she was busy helping the kids with Spur. I don't think she'll mind since I did share my pictures.
